A couple of months ago, in "The death of Nelson," I had connected the Three of Wands with a painting of the Battle of Trafalgar, which also shows ships on a yellowish sea:
I had a vague memory that there was a Battle of Baltimore which was also a naval battle and wondered if any paintings of that battle might also be relevant to the Three of Wands. One of the very first search results that came up, "Battle of Baltimore" at a site called History Maps, featured a painting by Walter Martin Baumhofer that was indeed very suggestive of Waite's card.
Not only is it a partly yellowish sea with ships on it, but in the foreground we have a man in red, with a garment of another color draped over his shoulders, looking out at the sea, exactly as in the Three of Wands.
Who is this man in red? None other than Francis Scott Key, for it was during the Battle of Baltimore that he saw the American flag still flying above Fort McHenry, inspiring him to write the poem that would later become our national anthem. The painting is usually titled Rockets' Red Glare in allusion to the poem, but Baumhofer serendipitously chose to make that glare primarily a different color, giving us the yellow sky and sea that links his picture to the Three of Wands.
The melody to which Key's poem is now sung originally belonged to a drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven." Realizing I was ignorant of the original lyrics, I looked them up. I was surprised to see how the third verse begins:
"The yellow-hair'd God" obviously means Apollo here, but on September 11 (just missing the anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore) I published "The Golden Age," -- a poem which I said in a comment there was "inspired mainly by the yellow sky and sea on the Three of Wands and by my old dream about Ajax and Epicles fighting under a blue sun" -- and this poem ascribes yellow hair to another god:
How few now know! In days of old,The sun was blue, the sky was gold,And Homer's fabled "wine-dark sea"In truth was more like Pinot gris,A shade of yellow full as fairAs blond Poseidon’s flaxen hair.
This is part of the conceit of the poem, which is that Homer's color terms have been grossly misunderstood because of how different the world was in his day. Poseidon's Homeric epithet κυανοχαίτης is usually understood to mean that his hair was dark, or blue, or blue-green -- anyway, the color of the sea. If Homer's sea was in fact yellow, then Poseidon must be reimagined as blond.
By a strange coincidence, just yesterday, in "The last Moriori," I posted an image of the flag of Barbados, which features the trident of Poseidon against a yellow background.
In fact, the overall design of the flag itself suggests the Three of Wands, where a narrow yellow sea lies between two somewhat bluish landmasses.
Barbados first came up in "An intense wish to see Barbados," where it was closely associated with Paris. Any of my readers who used to read Bill's now-deleted blogs will remember his posts about hearing "Francis Scott Key" as "France has got key."
Incidentally, check out the kind of designs that come up if you google flag of altantis:
I'm not the only one to have made the obvious connection:

Hello again, Mr. Tychonievich. I hope you'll excuse another off-topic comment, but i was trying to research a certain question i have and the internet has yielded no satisfactory answers, so as a Mormon i was hoping you could explain this:
How do Mormons say both that human spirits are co-eternal with God, and yet also His/Their begotten children?
William,
Part 1 of 2
Wow! Very interesting.
"Coincidently, I was just about to post a comment
on your: Cast your bread upon the Waters post
when I saw this new post.
I think you might find my comment interesting especially
my connections to the reference of the colors
worn by the person in the illustration on the
Tarot card.
I also took note of the Black and White 'sash'
as well.
Below is what I wrote with intentions of posting
it on your Cast your bread post.
(Note because of your reference to the color
yellow, I just added the color yellow to my comment).
Interestingly in your new post the Atlantis Flag
shows a laurel wreath in yellow under the trident
which I make reference to the laurel wreath
in my comment, because the person in the tarot card
is wearing a laurel wreath and so is the green lion
in alchemy.
Recall my many comments about yellow.
Here's my comment:
William you wrote:" I dreamt that I was at a buffet restaurant
with my family, and the background music was just
this one line repeated again and again: Cast your
bread upon the waters."
~~~~~~~~
Decipher the symbolism William.
A kitchen setting, or eating food in a dream
is symbolic of : food for thought.
A buffet is a presentation of many
choices, many 'foods for thought'.
NOT just ONE or two.
Recall my many comments about
what I believe regarding gathering
knowledge from a vast spectrum of ideologies.
Having choices, is also Free Will, no?
Interestingly in this post
is yet another sync regarding water( female energy),
navigation ( Eight point Star) and 11.
I think I commented on that same Tarot card regarding
the person in the illustration passing through the
doorway( portal ). Recall I sent you a photo
of the two large sycamore trees on Marshall and my
property, that I believe
is a portal because of my odd experiences
with the 3 deer and my dog Jacob.
Could this tarot card have connections
to your 'knocking on wood' sync ya think?
Note the person, although he is not knocking,
is holding on to one of the 'sycamore trees',
his lower body and right shoulder is cloaked in red,
his upper body left side in green
and the sleeve is BLUE.
Regarding red the fire element.
Copy and paste:
"In alchemy, the element red is often associated
with the Rubedo, which signifies the final stage
of the magnum opus,
representing the culmination of the alchemical process.
The Rubedo is characterized by the reddening of substances,
symbolizing the ****reunion of opposites***
and the ***merging of spirit
and matter.*** This stage is often depicted with symbols
such as the phoenix, red rose, or a crowned king,
which represent the transformation and perfection achieved
through the alchemical journey.
The color red is also considered
an *****intermediate color between white and black,***
reflecting the *** balance and transformation****
that alchemists see."
~~~~~~~
William,
Part 2
Note the reference to color** between white and black**
and connect the dots to my recent miscegenation comments.
Also my many comments about
the alchemical wedding of opposites. Male/Female.
The El's were the Conquerors. They were bloodline,
Navigators and Aviators, Mathematicians, Occultists,
proponents of eugenics and depopulation,
but first and foremost they were Alchemists.
The element green in Alchemy:
Copy and paste:
"This image is a classic alchemical illustration depicting
the Green Lion, one of the most well known
symbols in alchemy.
The Green Lion represents the “universal solvent,”
the mysterious force capable of dissolve.
Its green color signifies matter in its raw, unrefined state,
while the golden mane already carries the promise
**** of transformation **** and perfection.
The ***laurel wreath*** upon its head symbolizes
victory and fulfillment, the triumph of the alchemical work
and the approach to the Philosopher’s Stone."
The Green Lion devours the sun,
causing the ****nigredo or the black stage
(spiritual death)*** of the alchemist.
~~~~~~~~
Note that in the Tarot card , the illustration
of the person who has entered through
the doorway( portal) is wearing a laurel wreath.
copy and paste color Yellow:
"Citrinitas, or sometimes xanthosis, is a term
given by alchemists to "yellowness."
It is one of the four major stages of the
alchemical magnum opus.
In alchemical philosophy, citrinitas stood for the dawning
of the "solar light" inherent in one's being,
and that the reflective "lunar or soul light"
was no longer necessary.
The other three alchemical stages were
nigredo (blackness),
albedo (whiteness), and rubedo (redness)."
Have you had a chance to look at Barbados as an Elvish word game? Could be relevant.
Bar = Home, House
Bad = Path, road, to travel, tread, etc.
Os = Root for Osse, Tolkien's god of the sea
So, with Barbad, you have reference to a "Pathway Home". In my guess, that pathway lies through the sea, and we are also dealing with a home that currently lies under the sea in the instance of Numenor, so perhaps the allusion to Osse has both those in mind.
Anyway, I thought it was an interesting game given the other symbols, the trident, Atlantis, etc. In other writings, Tolkien refers to Osse as "Saefrea", Old English for "Sea Ruler".
Mr. Contrast, email me if you want to discuss theological questions unrelated to the post.
Besides Poseidon, "the devil" of popular imagination also wields a trident or pitchfork and has a beard (the etymological meaning of Barbados). The trident is black, like a printer's devil. The narrow sea between two landmasses is akin to a canyon.
William,
You wrote :"The trident is black, like a printer's devil."
~~~~
I'm sure you know that a printer's devil refers to
the apprentices' hands and skin blackened by the ink.
Copy and paste: ( see first link )
The term "printer's devil" has been ascribed
to the apprentices' hands and skin getting
stained black with ink when removing sheets
of paper from the tympan.
In 1683, English printer Joseph Moxon
wrote that "devil" was a humorous term
for boys who were covered in ink:
"whence the Workmen do Jocosely call them Devils;
and sometimes Spirits, and sometimes Flies."
~~~~~~~~
There was an episode of the 1960's TV show
Twilight Zone titled: Printer's Devil
In that episode, the actor Burgess Merdith plays
Mr. Smith.
Copy and Paste:
"This particular installment, which aired on February 28, 1963,
weaves a compelling narrative centered
around themes of desperation, temptation,
and the age-old conflict between good and evil.
At its heart, the plot revolves around a struggling
newspaper editor who makes a Faustian bargain
with the Devil to save his failing business."
~~~~~~
Interesting the name Smith.
copy and paste:
The "black" in "blacksmith" refers to the black firescale
, a layer of oxides that forms on the surface of the metal
during heating.
The origin of smith is the Old English word smið meaning
"blacksmith", originating from the Proto-Germanic
*smiþaz meaning "skilled worker."
~~~~~~
The symbolism of the black represents the dark night
of the soul not necessarily the devil, but when our ego sells
out our soul for greed, lust, personal gain, indeed
we die. Death is a Transformation.
The Nigredo begins the alchemical transformation.
Perhaps transformation is why the Barbados Flag
features a broken Black Trident on
a yellow/gold background symbolic of
taking back their independence from the British
and Colonial Rule.
Transformation has nothing to do with the devil/evil.
I suppose the three tines of the trident also correspond to the three wands on the card.
William,
I also wanted to add something to what I wrote
which is this: "The symbolism of the black represents
the dark night of the soul not necessarily the devil,
but when our ego sells
out our soul for greed, lust, personal gain,
we die. Death is a Transformation."
~~~~
What I want to add is that when our ego sells out our
soul for greed, lust, personal gain, etc. indeed
we die *** spiritually***.
In my humble.
Another interesting find that I didn't see before
in the illustration of the man in the Tarot card
is this: he is either wearing RED shoes or
his feet is red.
Decipher the symbolism.
Everything in the paranormal is symbolic.
And I know that I repeat my perspective about the Nigredo
quite often but it's because in your dreams and syncs,
it appears ( at least to me ) that you are in
that place of transformation and truth be told
we ALL are, humanity collectively.
And while it's true transformation is a death
and is feared but that's because we don't
understand Why its purpose.
We also physically evolve in darkness
in the belly of the woman.
As far as the Printer's Devil being black like a trident,
check out on the wiki page, ( link below ).
The photo is of a Red devil, with a black belt and hair.
Growing up I've always thought of the so called
devil as being red, not black.
So, and begs the question:
why is the man on the Tarot card wearing red shoes?
In alchemy the Rubedo is the end of the magnum
opus. Please read my previous comment about
the Rubedo, especially this part:
"The color red is also considered
an *****intermediate color between white and black,***
reflecting the *** balance and transformation****
that alchemists see."
In other words red is the intercourse ( marriage)
of opposites, white/ black ,including male/ female
which of course is needed
for the creation, i.e. the trinity.
The trident and the pitchfork
both are instruments of change and control.
For Barbados, the change/creation
was gaining independence.
The pitchfork ( as in the devil's pitchfork )
is a tool used to move something
from one place to another which is transformation.
In the Tarot card, the man walks through the duality portal
of the two 'trees' and on the other side is the third tree
symbolic of creation. It's the third tree that he holds on to
wearing a garment with blue sleeves.
The death of duality has always been the alchemists
'gold' aka Philosopher's Stone. E. Pluribus Unum
Interestingly Jamaica, which was also under British Colonial
Rule has a similar motto as E. Pluribus which is : Out
of Many, One People.
Copy and Paste:
Rubedo is a Latin word meaning "redness" that
was adopted by alchemists to define
the ***fourth and final major stage in their magnum opus.
Both gold and the philosopher's stone
were associated with the color red,
as rubedo signaled alchemical success,
and the end of the great work.
Rubedo is also known by the Greek word iosis."
~~~~~~~~~
Also given that I'm writing this in November,
isn't it interesting that it was a Rubedo
( Jack Ruby ( Jacob Rubenstein ) who killed Oswald
on Nov 24 1963 on the 33 degree parallel.
The trinity there was Kennedy, Ruby and Oswald.
America certainly did 'transform' after 11/22/1963.
The loss of optimism.
