"I see you've got one of mine here," Bob said.
"Oh, did you contribute to that?" I said. "Some of the syntax chapters? I'll bet David Dowty wrote something for it, too." I turned to the very long list of authors at the front of the book and began scanning it for Dr. Dowty's name. It didn't seem to be there.
Bob turned his attention to a picture on the wall, which was a Ten of Swords card, enlarged and framed.
"Interesting choice," he said. "What does it mean?"
"Death to the natural man."
"In the Shakespearean sense? Or no, St. Paul. Crucifixion is the more usual symbol, you know."
"Those are crosses."
"Ten of them?"
"Ten is a cross, too. And yes, some of us require a bit of overkill."
With that I woke up.
⁂
It may seem strange to be discussing St. Paul with a Jew, but Bob Levine has read everything and catches every allusion -- or at least I've never been able to slip one past him. (Though in this dream, I guess I did. He should have known I was thinking more of King Benjamin than Paul.) His "Shakespearean" comment was a reference to a conversation we had more than 20 years ago. I had told him I was considering graduate work in head-driven phrase structure grammar.
"I think you should go for it. You're a natural.""Not in the Shakespearean sense I hope.""Like Touchstone? You know we don't believe in blank slates around here."
In Shakespeare, the noun natural refers to a fool or idiot, and one so described is Touchstone in As You Like It. A literal touchstone is a slate, though, and "blank slate" was something of a buzzword in the linguistics world at that time (see for example Steven Pinker's 2002 book with that title). Interestingly, Touchstone is described as having been sent by Fortune, or Tyche -- "Hath not Fortune sent in this fool to cut off the argument?"
The last time Bob and I corresponded was in 2015, when we were discussing a particular syntactic structure that is so hard to deal with theoretically that its official name is the Big Mess. One of Bob's quirks is that the example sentences he creates to illustrate syntactic points always feature gender-neutral names like Robin and Leslie, as well as references to Ostrogoths or Visigoths. Thus it was that our email exchange focused on these three sentences:
This is so difficult a question that it has never been answered.Terry is as skilled an oboist as Robin.How eloquent an Ostrogoth Leslie is!
I mention this only because both Terry (the giant Irishman) and Robin (the Hobgoblin) have been in the sync stream.
Also possibly relevant is another dream with Bob Levine in it: 2020's "Black dogs and Reubens."
When I googled Robert Levine to see what he was up to these days, the first results were about Mary Tyler Moore's husband. Possibly relevant in connection with Weezer's "Buddy Holly."
11 comments:
Robert Levine is such an interesting name symbolically for this dream. Levine apparently can come from"Leofwine", meaning "Dear or Beloved Friend". I just covered off Elvish words/ names Mellon and Melemno that both refer to a dear/ beloved friend, the latter having to do with Thingol-John (the Beloved) specifically. Given the Robert name as well, and its reference to one shining in glory, it is possible you were interacting with another representation of John here
My guess is the Language Log that belonged to Bob was different than you thought it was. And his comment may have been meant more literally than you took it. He said you had one of his books. You took that to mean he was a contributor in the book. However, it is possible that he meant the book actually was his or belonged to him, and you had it in your possession.
The reference to the additional cross with the roman numeral 10 is clever, and highlighting that there are 11 crosses represented, not just 10, seems relevant.
Bob Levine' surname doesn't come from Leofwine. Rather it identifies him as not technically a Jew but a Levite. Of course John the Baptist was a Levite, too, so you get your John connection either way.
The Chinese character for 10 is a Greek cross, and the word for cross is literally "figure-ten." Historically, the suit of Swords is believed to derive ultimately from this Chinese character. (All four suits originally represented denominations of money.)
In Taiwan the Jack is commonly called the Eleven, so the "Eleven of Swords" would be the Jack of Swords, which we've already identified with John.
The sword as a cross reminds me of this brief rhyme from Yeats:
If Jupiter and Saturn meet,
What a crop of mummy wheat!
The sword's a cross; thereon He died:
On breast of Mars the goddess sighed.
Venus is the goddess who had an affair with Mars, so we have the same four planets I've mapped to the Flour Boys. Since they're Flour Boys, perhaps Mummy Wheat is their mother?
The specific reference to David Dowty also seems potentially relevant. As a real person, Dr. Dowty focuses on formal semantics expressed with mathematical symbols, and I once worked as an assistant in his class on set theory and symbolic logic for linguists. His surname means "brave" ("doughty") but also suggests "doubt-y."
William,
Part 1 of 4
Interesting another EL-even connection, no?
Also I don't know if the following is
on topic or not to this particular post,
but because it just happened to me (Aug 13)
and factoring in how very extremely odd it is,
I thought I'd share it with you.
As you read this please recall
of what I've shared regarding
my perspective as far as what I personally
believe a synchronicity experience and event
truly is.
As mentioned, I believe that our soul gives us
puzzle pieces for very important reasons, and because
puzzle pieces are from a spiritual source,
I believe that so are the messages.
Case in point:
Today ( Aug 13) I was taking a late afternoon nap
because I had yet another one of my barometric
headaches, which I've been getting a lot of those
lately.
I can't recall all of the dream, but just before
I woke up, I felt that someone ( whom I felt to
be a male )was standing
at the foot of my bed and I heard him say
the word "Dren", which I felt Dren was me.
I woke up startled and of course
no mystery man was at the foot of my bed
nor was Marshall.
I immediately got on the computer and googled Dren
and the first thing that came up was this:
Copy and paste:
"Dren is a human/animal hybrid created by two young,
rebellious scientists in the science fiction horror movie Splice."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I read the description about Dren and there were
a few interesting bits of information about Dren
which seemed to connect with a few of my puzzle
pieces, however I didn't feel that this alien Dren
had anything to do with the meaning of the message
so I wikied Splice which is a 2009 movie
where the alien Dren was first introduced. ( see trailer
link below )
Keep in mind that I have never heard of Dren
or the movie Splice before this recent dream.
As I read this particular information
on the Splice wiki page, I found this:
Copy and paste:
"Genetic engineers Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast
hope to achieve fame by splicing animal DNA
to create hybrids for medical use at
the company N.E.R.D.
(Nucleic Exchange Research and Development).
The hybrid physically ages much faster than humans
and mentally develops like a human child.
After it spells out NERD with toys after seeing the acronym
on Elsa's shirt, Elsa names it "Dren".
William
Part 2
Seeing that the word NERD had significance
to Dren as does EL-sa , I google Nerd
and I don't recall how, but I was led to
a 1950 book by Dr. Seuss titled; If I Ran the Zoo.
Interestingly in the Seuss book I found
MANY many connections to my puzzle pieces which
is why I felt that the NERD connection was
the direction my soul wanted me to go.
Copy and paste wiki : ( asterisks mine )
"Nerd"
If I Ran the Zoo is often credited with the first
printed modern English appearance of the word "nerd",
although the word is not used in its modern context.
It is simply the name of an otherwise un-characterized
imaginary creature, appearing in the sentence:
"And then, just to show them, I'll sail to Ka-Troo/And Bring Back
an It-Kutch, a Preep, and a Proo,/A Nerkle,
**** a Nerd,
and a Seersucker too!"
____
Note that Theodor Seuss Geisel
was a Pisces born March 2 .
Here's the plot of the book:
Copy and paste: ( asterisks mine )
"When young Gerald McGrew visits the zoo,
he finds an "old fellow" who runs the zoo.
Gerald starts daydreaming about what he would do if
he were in charge, and decides that the exotic animals on display
are "not good enough".
He says that if he ran the zoo, he would
*** set all of the current animals free and
find*** new, more bizarre and exotic ones.***
Throughout the book he lists these creatures
, starting with a ***lion with ten feet and escalating to
more imaginative (and imaginary) creatures, such as
the Fizza-ma-Wizza-ma-Dill, "the world's biggest bird
from the island of Gwark, who eats only
*** pine trees, and spits out the bark".
~~~~~~~
Note the reference to 'odd fellow'. ( link below)
I found: If I Ran the Zoo, both on YouTube
and Archives.com.
And although I'm quite familiar with Dr. Seuss, this
particular story (If I Ran the Zoo ),
I'm not at all familiar with.
William
Part 3
I thought it interesting that
the story connected to not only many of my puzzle pieces, but
also my big picture, which is Transformation by rebellion.
Rebellion meaning having alternative beliefs
and transcending beyond the illusion.
McGrew ( grew meaning growth) releases the lion
from its cage first.
I also found it interesting that at the very end of the book
McGrew finds Fizza-ma-Wizza-ma- Dill,
the world's biggest bird.
A Phoenix/ Phonex perhaps?
The bird only eats pine trees, which is interesting
as you may recall my many comments about the pineal
gland and the Third Eye. Also recall that I also
shared with you that on Marshall and I's property
there is over 200 pine trees,
which the previous owner planted.
McGrew, is a transformer much like the Übermensch,
Superman, and Batman( which all have
been in the sync stream of late).
As I've commented many times I
personally believe that we ( humanity collectively
and you and I individually ) are on the precipice
of a Shifting of Ages.
Check out these other connections in If I Ran the Zoo
and my puzzle pieces.
In the video at marker/frame 1:12 note the illustration
of the 4 dark figures ( Beatles perhaps? ) shown
behind bars. Note their Saturn Hats.
Also note that the Lion that was released by McGrew
becomes transformed, with 10 legs instead of 4.
At frame 1:40 note that the hen's top nots
looks very similar to the hairstyle of the mop tops ( Beatles).
Also throughout the book, are many references to Beasts.
Hens sing at first light ( sunrise ).
On the Beatles Revolver album ( released )
on Aug 5, 1966 ) is a song titled; And your Bird can Sing.
Also the Beatles' Revolver album ( their 7th )
especially the cover was symbolically
the Transition of the Beatles
from the mop tops to Sgt Pepper.
Note the song Tomorrow never Knows ( link below )
and the repetition of the outro:
'of the beginning'.
At frame 2:53
McGrew says : " If you want to catch beasts you
don't see everyday, you have to go places
quite out of the way,
You have to go places no others can get to
you have to get cold and you have to get wet too
Up past the North Pole where the frozen winds squeal
I'll go and I'll hunt in my Skeegle-Mobile
____
I think this part of the book very much
mirrors my perspective about not
only transcending the illusion, but
in order to find the big picture,
we must research and travel a
vast spectrum of ideologies
( the good the bad and the ugly )
not just one road. In other words, we have
to go places quite out of our way
and where others can't get to i.e.
the road less traveled.
William
Part 4
Also, very interesting the mention of cold(frozen)
and wet which has also been in the sync stream
of late, especially wet having to do with your
baptism.
Also the North Pole. Recall my comments
about Greenland and Switzerland and
my 2014 Moon River dream when during
the chaos I frantically asked many people
if they were going North because I felt
that North was a safe haven.
Also note that McGrew is a Navigator.
I'll end these 4 comments, with this last odd
puzzle piece connection
( although there are several more very interesting
connections in this story).
However this particular one is especially
intriguing because it
connects with not only my recent paranormal
deer visits but also Horns.
Recall I shared my Feb 2015 Where's My Horns dream
here on your blog.
Also if you recall in one of my recent comments
I shared that the papa deer ( an 8 point Buck
according to Marshall) showed up one day
to join the others! The father, mother,
sister and brother( the two fawns).
In the video starting about frame 5:07,
the illustration is of a deer with many horns walks towards
McGrew's Zoo. Note that the deer ( who is small,
much like a fawn )walks towards what
appears to be a doorway and recall my
personal experience and the photo
I shared of the deer in the portal
on our property.
The story/poem reads : 'I'll capture one
tiny, I'll capture one cute.
I'll capture a deer no hunter would shoot'.
the poem continues: 'and speaking of horns
that are just a bit queer, I'll bring back
a very odd family of deer.
A father, a mother, a sister a brother
whose horns are connected from one to the other."
~~~~~~
This information ( which started with a dream )
was a very important
find for me as I feel it supports
my perspective regarding
how the metaphysical works.
I' m convinced that synchronicity
and dreams FINDS US.
All we have to do is connect the dots
and solve the puzzle which is
the soul's objective all along.
I happened to check the Orthosphere and noticed a link to a site called Touchstone in their blogroll. I clicked, but it was a dead link. Going to Touchstone's main site, I found that one of the featured articles was called "Rules for Fools." Not a very interesting article, but synchy:
https://www.touchstonemag.com/archives/article.php?id=38-04-014-v
I also noticed that the Touchstone logo includes what is called a "cross crosslet" -- i.e., a cross of which each limb is also a cross. Since a ten is a cross and a sword is a cross, this "cross of crosses" is a link to the Ten of Swords.
I wrote that Levine "can come" from Leofwine because that is factually true as one definition, just as it can come from Levi. The fact that both point can point to John, and the former in a way that directly links with those earlier Elvish words is interesting to me. That is all I was saying. Not sure why the pushback. I mean, that wasn't actually Bob Levine in your dream. That was Dream Bob, and Dream Bob is a symbol, and my own approach would be to look into his name as a symbol as well.
The Paul reference gets even more interesting when you look at what he writes of the natural man. It's possible this ties back to Terry's commentary on the Two Books. I know you were thinking King Benjamin, but the fact that Dream Bob was thinking first Shakespeare (seeming to allude to your earlier real life exchange) and then Paul could be something to look into.
Anyway, the appearance for Cross is interesting for two other reasons. First, in looking at Megatron's name, I recognized that Tron is the Elvish word for Cross, but I didn't know what to do with that, other than we had Cross connected with the Elvish name or root for your mental block, Maeglin.
Second, Cross is actually an Elvish word which means "Ball". The Balls, or Stones, in my story have been specifically compared with swords, spears, etc. And in the case of King Arthur and the Sword in the Stone, for example, the words or stories being pulled out from those Stones being the Word of God as a Sword. That symbolism could be potentially interesting as played out in the Ten of Swords card image in your dream.
It wasn't intended as pushback. Just pointing out where his name in fact comes from and that it's also a link to the combined "John" figure.
William,
Not sure if this connects to my Dren comment,
but just today while scrolling through the net,
I just realized that the upcoming and first
hurricane of the season churning in the Atlantic
is named Erin.
Presented on the weather channels is
all of the spaghetti models of Erin's trajectory.
When I saw that, I thought; hmmm wasn't there
a recent spaghetti post on William's blog?
I then googled Erin and found this information
very interesting indeed : 'Eriu: Powerful Irish Goddess
And Sacred Uisneach Hill Where She And God Lugh Are Buried.'
Although the word Erin and Dren are not
spelled the same, ren becomes rin
when the vowels are exchanged.
Copy and paste, asterisks mine ;
reindeer(n.)
c. 1400, also raindere, reynder, rayne-dere, genus of deer
inhabiting the arctic regions of Europe,
from a Scandinavian source such as Old Norse hreindyri
"reindeer," with dyr "animal" (see deer) + hreinn,
the usual name for the animal in Old Norse,
from Proto-Germanic *khrinda-
(source also of Old English hran "reindeer;"
German ****Ren**** "reindeer," which was
altered by folk etymology influence of rennen
"to run;" and Swedish renko "female reindeer,"
with ko "cow" (n.)).
~~~~~~~~~
Very interesting ( at least to me )
that both of my 'spaghetti models'
( D-ren and If I Ran the Zoo, and
E-rin ) connects with a deer.
Although I'm very convinced that my perspective
regarding Dren and Nerd( which led me to, If I Ran the Zoo)
was chosen as the meaning of the message, I'm going
to keep my eye ( pun not intended) on hurricane Erin.
