Showtime now is getting nearer

These two songs have been running through my mind for a few days now. Now they can run through yours, too.

I've always thought the Ween song was about preparing to die. "I'm dancing in the show tonight" always reminds me of that old joke: The good news is that, yes, there is baseball in heaven. The bad news is you're pitching tonight.

And if the Ween song's not creepy enough for you, their source material was even creepier!

Today I was catching up on some blog-reading and went to S. K. Orr's blog, Steeple Tea. I found a Feb. 24 post called "Schools," consisting of a quote from Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen: "Learning comes from books; penetration of a mystery from suffering."

The photo illustrating the post looked awfully familiar, so I went back to the The Song that Inspired Ween's "Dancing in the Show Tonight" and found that it was presented by none other than Bishop Fulton J. Sheen.

This was the first I'd ever heard of Bishop Sheen, who died the year I was born but was apparently a well-known televangelist in the '50s and '60s.

I used to see Archbishop Sheen on television in the Sixties. My grandmother, though not Catholic, would sometimes watch his program.

Since coming to see the pre-Vatican II Catholic faith as true, I have acquired several books by Sheen, books by which I have profited. I've also read a very interesting biography of Sheen that I found online. He seemed to be a remarkable man

One interesting tidbit....the actor Martin Sheen, whose real name is Estavez, took his stage name from Archbishop Sheen as a sign of respect.

Interesting. I'd always assumed Sheen was his real name, since his son is called Charlie Sheen. Apparently stage names can be hereditary, too.

Yes, Martin Sheen's other son, the actor Emilio Estavez, kept his father's real name. I'm sure the Hollywood crowd plays fast & loose with all KINDS of things.

Sabbatical notice

I'm taking a break from blogging for a bit, exact timetable undetermined. In the meantime, feel free to contact me by email.
