Back then I certainly did not expect Western Civ, or its constituent nations, to last until now.
So it may be quotable, but the actual content of my "quote" missed the mark, it seems - although *eventually* I will be correct!
It depends on how you define "long," I suppose. For a civilization, I would think centuries rather than decades.
Bill's quote, though, remains every bit as relevant as it's ever been.
Well, wrapping chains around people's heads does seem to be a preferred divine punishment for really bad dudes running a bunch of bad boys.
I am thinking Melkor-Morgoth's second and 'final' defeat at the following the War of Wrath. The first time Melkor was bound by the chain Angainor it was at the hands of Tulkas - the second time it was done by Eonwe, involving wrapping Morgoth's head with a chain in more than one way. First, Morgoth's crown was beaten into a collar and fixed around his neck. Second, the chain was bound to the collar, thus binding him by the head, before he was thrust out into the Void.
Interestingly, the first time Melkor was bound by the chain also involved a Pool. Cuivienen is known as the Water or Pool of Awakening, and it was due to those first Elves appearing at the Pool that the Valar assaulted and bound Melkor.
